EVA Boat Flooring Versus Standard Marine Carpet: A Comparison That Actually Matters
Marine carpet has been standard on production boats for decades, largely because it's cheap to install at the factory, not because it performs well over time. If you're weighing up whether an EVA foam upgrade is worth it, looking at how the two materials actually behave on the water makes the decision a lot easier.
How Each Handles Heat
Marine carpet, especially in darker colours, heats up fast under direct sun. The fibres hold that heat at the surface, and there's not much you can do about it short of avoiding the deck in the middle of the day.
EVA foam generally runs cooler underfoot, particularly in lighter colours, and most boat owners notice the difference straight away during summer. It still warms up in direct sun like any material would, but it doesn't trap heat the way carpet fibres do.
What Happens When Water Gets Involved
This is the biggest practical difference between the two. Marine carpet is porous, so it soaks up water and dries slowly, especially in Queensland's humidity. A wet carpet deck can stay damp for hours, and that trapped moisture is exactly the environment mould and bacteria need to take hold beneath the surface.
EVA foam is closed-cell, so the material itself doesn't absorb water at all. Moisture sits on top and either evaporates or drains away. This one difference explains most of the gap in long-term durability between the two materials.
Why Carpet Starts To Smell And EVA Doesn't
Trapped moisture in carpet fibres feeds the bacteria and mould that produce the musty smell common in older marine carpet installations. Once that smell sets in, it's genuinely hard to shift, because it's coming from inside the fibre structure, not just the surface.
EVA foam doesn't give moisture anywhere to sit inside the material, so it doesn't develop that same lingering odour. A surface clean is usually enough to keep it smelling fresh.
Grip When Things Get Wet
Carpet can get properly slippery once it's wet, and that risk grows as the fibres flatten down after a few seasons of foot traffic. On a moving boat, particularly around swim platforms and cockpit areas where water exposure is constant, that's a real safety issue, not just an inconvenience.
EVA foam decking is textured specifically to maintain grip in wet conditions, using brushed, embossed, or routed patterns depending on the application. Cleaning: A Few Minutes Versus A Real Job
Carpet needs regular vacuuming, occasional deep cleaning, and constant vigilance around sunscreen, fish blood, and general marine grime. Stains that set into the fibres are often permanent, and the cleaning effort rarely matches the result.
EVA foam decking just needs a rinse with fresh water after use and the occasional wipe down with mild soap. Most marks come off easily because nothing soaks into the material in the first place.
Lifespan In Queensland Conditions
Marine carpet typically starts showing wear, matting, fading, and odour within a few seasons under Brisbane and Gold Coast conditions, and replacement is often driven by hygiene and comfort rather than appearance alone.
EVA foam decking that's UV stabilised, closed-cell, and properly installed with accurate 3D scanning and templating tends to hold up well beyond that, though actual lifespan depends on usage, care, and installation quality, not just the material itself.

Carpet doesn't offer much beyond a handful of stock colours, and every install ends up looking fairly similar.
